Inconsistent high blood reading. What is the most mild antihypertension drug?

my blood reading has been like a roller coaster ride this year. All along i am having 120/80 and suddenly it went up to 140/80 and 160/90 and back to 120-130/80. Recently it has stayed in the region of 140/80 for 2 weeks until now. Thryoid is normal and i have no family history. It is driving me crazy. I am only 27! Surely my stress cannot cause such a sudden surge.

Can anyone here recommend a most mild form of antihypertension drug for mild hypertension with minimal side effect? I wouldn't want to have an adverse side effect like enalapril. I have heard of Tenex. Anyone tried that? Does Durietics work alone?

Thank you!

Hi Melvine,

I'm not a doctor. This does not constitute medical advice.

Yes, diuretics often work alone, and I believe that is where doctors are supposed to begin in treating hypertension with drug therapy.

However, before beginning drug therapy, you should try lifestyle modifications first to see if they are effective. Sodium restriction (less than 2300 mg sodium per day) and regular exercise are often recommended as having beneficial effects.

I have to disagree with you - I believe stress is indeed quite capable of causing sustained hypertensive readings. You might want to look into relaxation techniques (deep breathing, meditation, etc) as they are said to often be effective.

Cheers,
Bob D.
