Infant Heart Murmer - aortic and pulmonary stenosis

Posted by DEBORAH on June 11, 1999 at 10:37:32

My daughter now 7 mos. was diagnosed with a heart murmur at her 6 mos. check up.  We then took her to a cardiologist for an ultrasound.  A narrowing of the pulmonary and aortic valves was found.  The cardiologist then stated that the only way she could have this was if she has Williams Syndrome.  We have an appointment to see a Geneticist on July 12th.  However, I would like to know if there are other reasons for the stenosis. She is normal on all growth charts.
Thank you
Deborah

Dear Deborah
It is reasonable to see a geneticist for evaluation of syndromes such as William's syndrome. However, many cases of congenital heart disease never have a specific genetic disorder that can be isolated, at least with current scientific techniques; it is still worthwhile to look, not only to help the child in question, but also to plan appropriately for other pregnancies.
I hope this has been useful. I wish you the best of luck. Feel free to write back.
