A dear friend had surgery two weeks ago to repair a leaky valve and correct atrial fibrillation--surgery went well but then his lungs started filling and he started wheezing. Now has a bad case of asthma--it was only mild when he went into the hospital. Long story short--he coughed so hard, he broke one of the wires holding his sternum together and the resulting irritation (they think) caused a bad infection. They went in and removed a part of the sternum and, for the third operation, made a flap out of his pectoral muscle. Now his lungs are still quite full but he is unable to cough it up in this condition and his arm is very swollen from the IVs. Does anyone recover from a sternum infection? Has anyone in this forum?
