Information about the use of cloridrato de amiodarona

by Hugo__0, Jul 27, 1998 12:00AM

We would like to know about possible side effects for the long-time use of cloridrato de amiodarona.  We would like to know about biological changes in the eyes and lungs due to this medication.  Also, if you know if these changes are irreversible.  Thank you and we await your response.

Dear Hugo,
Amiodarone is a medicine used often by cardiologists to control abnormal heart
rates in patients.   It has the potential to damage the eyes, liver, lungs, and
thyroid gland thus in the U.S. it is recommended that regular checks of the eyes,
regular blood work to evaluate the thyroid and liver function, and a regular chest
X-ray be performed in all patients on amiodarone.  Most of the side effects are
reversible, but only if caught in a timely manner as the drug has a long half life
and hangs around in the blood stream for months after the patient stops taking it.
The appropriate interval for evaluations of these organ systems potentially harmed
by amiodarone is every 6 months to 1 year.  Good Luck.
