Injured leg- lots of clots- worried about complications

My father recently injured his leg whilst vaulting over a wall (idiot!) He cut himself, not too badly we first thought, on his shin, overlying the tibia. After a few days it had swollen up considerably, and was bruised. After a week or so he decided to go to the doctor, and the doctor dismissed it as general swelling.
However, when he went for a routine blood pressure check a few days later, he mentioned his leg to the nurse, who then examined the leg, and drew out several 'marble' sized blood clots. He has since had to go on antibiotics, as the leg (from what he has told me) has become infected. I'm just really worried that some sort of complication might arise, be it cardiovascular or ulcerative or anything else. I'm scared for my dad.
Background:
He's 50, on nicotinic acid (since 2004?), has been on statins for about a year, and has very recently been started on ACE inhibitors. He is also 'pre-diabetic' and has a BMI of about 32+ (quite a big fella). He has a history of hypertension, suffers from hypercholesterolaemia, hypertriglyceridaemia, is a non smoker, drinks in moderation and eats fairly healthily, although his job is a stressful one. His mother (85?) suffers from angina, which has seen her hospitalised with unstable attacks twice.

Any advice/ reassurance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I am not sure what exactly you are worried about. He has an injury to his leg, possibly a fracture, which has become infected. There also may be a clot in the area, although from your description these sound more like superficial clots than those in the deep veins. I guess the most worrisome thing would be that he develops endocarditis, or a heart infection, but if he is on good antibiotics it is not likely to occur. Certainly, smoking is not good for either central or peripheral circulation, so he should stop this habit soon. Another possibility is that he develops a blood clot on that leg, either from the trauma or from decreased activity on that leg. If he becomes very sedentary hen he should receive prophylaxis against this by being dosed with heparin.
