Intraatrial septum

Intraatrial septum

The final conclusion of my echocardiogram is:  Patient is in sinus rhythm.
Aortic, mitral, and tricuspid valve opening appears to be normal.
The right atrial, right ventricle, left atrial and left ventricular dimension is normal. The left ventricular systolic function is good.  Ejection fraction about 55%. No segmental wall motion abnormality was noted.  There is an aneurysm of the intraatrial septum present.
No pericardial effusion present.
Pulse wave with continuous wave and color Doppler shows a trace of mitral and a trace of tricuspid regurgitation present.
My question is:  Is the 55% ejection fraction normal? Is the trace of mitral and tricuspid regurgitation significant?  Does the severity of the aneurysm depend on size?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Q: "My question is:  Is the 55% ejection fraction normal? Is the trace of mitral and tricuspid regurgitation significant?  Does the severity of the aneurysm depend on size."

The ejection fraction is the amount of blood pumped with each heartbeat.  Normal is 50 to 70%,  Mild, trace, slight, etc. valve leakage is not medically significant and almost never progesses or causes any symptoms.

An aneurysm of the interatrial septum (wall that separates left and right upper chambers. Atrium Septal Aneursym (ASA) develops due to pressure within the atrium that producing a bulge to the low pressure side, but it can be found with individuals with normal atrial pressure and that would suggest a congenital anomaly.  Yes, size is a factor.  A larger size can crowd out available space for adequate filling of blood in the atrium.  Also, a larger size has a thinner wall and there may be some risk for a rupture.

Hope this provides a perspective that helps you, and if you have any further questions or comments you are invited to respond.  Take care,

Ken
