Is This Serious?

I am a healthy 39 year old female.  I went to see my general practioner because it felt like my heart was skipping beats and beating fast for a few beats once in a while.  She ordered a 24 hour holter and these are the results:

"The patient is in sinus rhythm.  Rates varied from 55 up to 187 beats per minute.  Rare artial ectopics were seen.  There was one five beat episode of wide complex tachycardia slightly irregular which may be atrial fibrillation with aberrant conduction or a brief episode of nonsustained ventricular tachycardia.  The patient had some skipping of the heartbeat but no other significant arrhythmia was detected."

I understand the skipped beats are not serious, but what about the "five beat episode of wide complex tachycardia........"

She has ordered an echocardigram and referred me to a cardiologist, but my appointment is in 4 months.

Is this serious?  Could you please give me some information?

Thank you.

P.S.  When my heart rate was 187 beats per minute I was exercising - jogging and riding a bike.

It is difficult to know what those five beats represent without further testing. I would also recommend an echocardiogram to see if your heart is structurally normal. If it is normal, it is unlikely that those five beats represent anything serious. If you have worse palpitaions or any associated symptoms with your palpitations such as shortneess of breath or chest pain of dizziness, you will need a more urgent evaluation than 4 months.
