Is there anything I can do to stop this pacemaker pain?

by DodiAD, Aug 18, 2002 12:00AM
I have had a pacemaker for 7 years now and for some reason only recently I started having problems with pain.
I have severe pain around the pacemaker along the side nearest to the breastbone (but not on the other side furthest away from the breastbone). It hurts so badly just to breathe because of the pain. I also stop moving my left arm. I try to massage it and it doesn't improve. The pain travels through my back and sometimes, the back is the only place I feel it. I also have a similar pain that seems to run along where my leads enter my heart and with each heartbeat I am in pain.
I am not receiving much help for this and I am not sure what to do.
Do you have any suggestions? Would be unreasonable of me if I asked for another chest x-ray? I cannot remember the last time I had one.
Any feedback you could give me would be very appreciated.
Thank you.

Pacemaker:

You are experiencing pain around your pacemaker site. It is difficult to say what may be causing this discomfort. However, I would be concerned about the possibility of infection. I would recommend seeing a cardiologist who can examine the site and order a chest X-ray to examine the leads and maybe an echocardiogram. I would try to schedule an appointment this week.

Thanks for your question,
