I've been having weird pains.

I've been experiencing some strange pains in my back and arm. About a week ago the pain got so bad that I went to the ER a knot developed in the middle of my upper back near my right shoulder blade, the pain went through my shoulder blade down to my right elbow. The doctors at the ER diagnosed me with a sprain, and put me on steroids and pain killers. The pain remains I think I was miss diagnosed. My mom also died about 6 months ago and I've been struggling with it, could this pain be a result of depression?
