Jogger Father has Atrial Fibrillation

by TiffGabler, Jul 27, 2009 01:02PM
My dad was diagnosed with A-Fib about a year and half ago but was not prescribed coumadin.  Four months ago, Dad had a mild stroke from A-Fib and now he is on coumadin.  Since that time, my dad cannot jog as long or as well as he used to.  This is a guy that jogged about 6 to 8 miles about 5 times a week for years ALONG with going to the gym.  Now that Dad is on coumadin, his jogging is limited to about one or not half a mile without stopping.  His doctors keep telling him the coumadin should not affect his jogging performance but I think it's pretty obvious that it is. Is there any way Dad can jog as much as he used to again?  Can he change dosage amounts?   Or take the medicine at a different time of day.

It is unlikely to be related to the coumadin and much more likely that this is a residual defect from the stroke. Has he seen a neurological specialist? He may have some subtle deficits ( such as vision, gait or balance) which prevent him from running. Coumadin generally does not affect the neurological system, and is by far the best protection against him having a new stroke.
