Some people have a lower than normal EF and function very well with their everyday activities.  It is estimated about 26% of heart failure (below 29%) population don't know they have a weak heart.

When the heart is weak (less forceful contractions) the system compensates by enlarging the heart chambers, increase the heart rate, etc.  The danger is when the heart dilates to the extent that contractions become weak and can't meet the system's demand for blood/oxygen.

Treatment can be mediction (medication) to reduce the heart's afterload.  This could include an ACE inhibitor to dilate vessels, a beta blocker to reduce the heart rate, direutic to reduce blood volume, medication to increase contractual strength, etc.  The prognosis depends on the underlying cause for low EF and LV dysfunction.

Several years ago, My EF was 13 - 29%, and enlarged left ventricle, etc.  Currently my EF is normal and heart dimensions are within the acceptable range with the help of medication.
