LV thickness

i have just had some extensive heart testing. I am a 42 year old male. I am very slightly overweight, but exercise everyday for an hour on the stair master and elliptical trainer at moderate intensity. I weigh 205 pounds and 6ft 1" tall.

Here are the results:

ECG - Normal
Carotid Doppler Carotid Bilateral - Normal, both sides clear, normal waveforms
ECG Stress Test - Normal functionality. Reached target easily. No breathlessness.
Echocardiogram - All normal, normal sizes and areas except left ventricle wall thickness  moderately thick at 1.6cm but left ventricle size and pumping motion is normal.

The cardiologist, after much consideration prescribed avapro (irbesteran). He said he could tell that based on the wall thickness I have had a history of high blood pressure, which is correct, since I was previously on a weak diuretic in my 30s by my GP.

My question is, how significant is the moderately high wall thickness of the LV to my overall health, given all other tests being normal?

Also, will the LV wall thickness abate. If so by how much?

Any advice would be really appreciated.

I know I should have asked the cardiologist these questions but I guess my mind went blank as he did not seem to make a big deal about it. He just said that I should continue to exercise and watch my weight and most importantly my stress levels.

The walls thicken to compensate in some way for the high BP. You are lucky you have caught it early, before the bp caused other problems and heart failure. The heart should return to near normal over time, once the BP is controlled.best of luck

If you are prescribed ACE inhibitors to reduce blood pressure, such as Ramipril, your heart has a very good chance of returning to normal.
