Leaking valves

I just got back from my doctor to discuss my echo.  My echo showed mild mitral and tricuspid regurgitation.  My mitral valve is "myxomatous" (what does that mean and is it serious, my doctor mentioned nothing about this)  While I have been experiencing shortness of breath, fatigue and dizziness, palpatations and have a murmur, my doctor says my symptoms aren't from the "leaking valves".  She says we basically watch it and retest with another echo in a few years.  I asked about meds before dental work and she says I don't need to worry about that.  She said I don't have mitral valve prolapse but everything I find is "myxomatous mitral valve" means mitral valve.   I am confused.
Is this something that sounds right or should I go get a second oppinion?
Heart disease runs in my mother's family.  My parents both died young from strokes with high BP.  My father was 47 and mother was 64.

Myxomatous mitral valve essentially means that the valve tissue is weakened.  Sometimes this leads to the valve not closing completely and as a result, there can be leakage of blood backwards instead of forward into the body.  Based on your test results, it appears that you have mild leakage of blood backwards.  This is not uncommon. Mild mitral and tricuspid regurgitation does not typically cause symptoms.

Mitral valve prolapse can be a complication of a myxomatous mitral valve, but it appears this was not detected on your echocardiogram.

The latest American Heart Association guidelines do not recommend antibiotic prophylaxis prior to dental work for mild mitral regurgitation in the absence of other cardiac abnormalities (eg - artificial valves, transplanted hearts, etc).

If you are having continued symptoms, you may benefit from further work-up.  Depending on your risk factors and age, further testing such as an exercise stress test and/or holter monitor may help identify other cardiac abnormalities.
