Left Atrium- borderline enlarged 4..1cm

Left Atrium- borderline enlarged 4..1cm

Results on an echocardiagram were:
mild mitral regurgitation with no mitral valve prolapse and enlarged left atrium 4.1cm and normal left ventricular syatolic function EF60%.
EKG report showed a sinus rhythm with a rate of 70. Unifocal pvcs noted.
Is enlarged left atrium dangerous?
is this dangerous and what is the normal reading

Thanks SB

I recenty had an echo and my report said my right atrium was enarged at 4.2cm (the top end of normal is 4.0cm). I asked my Cardioloist about it and she said that range was a normal variant and is sometimes refered to as an athlete's heart. I am a 48 year old male that has always been very active. The left atrium can be enlarged due to an active lifestyle but can also be a sign of Afib or Hyertension.

In any case, I was told 4.2 cm was insignificant and she called my results normal in light of no other abnormalities.

Good Luck,

Tony
