Leg Pain After Bypass

My step father had bypass surgery where they removed a vein from his left leg, this was 5 months ago.  His leg hurts ALL day long. He walks, he exercises, does everything the doctor told him to do. So why is the pain so bad? Also, his toes all curled up and when he lifts his toot to walk it hangs like it weighs 100 pounds!  Does anyone have any insight??

I agree with Ed34, it sure could be a cut nerve.  I know surgeons in general worry about  cutting nerves.  The toes that curl sound a lot like Hammertoes, probably unrelated to your post... you might google hammertoes and see if that is what his toes look like.

Did your Stepfather go to physical re-hab?  Most of us by-pass patients go there and I'd think they would have caught the problem.

As far as I'm aware this can occur. After my triple bypass surgery, my leg felt like it was burning for nearly two years and my lower shin/ankle area was very painful to the touch. It must be where the nerves are severed to retrieve the veins. When I got into the bath or shower, the water felt red hot to my left leg, while every other part of my body felt fine. It took about 2-3 years before my legs felt identical again.
