Lenght of time you may go off of Coumadin

by Robert P., Sep 29, 1999 12:00AM
I'am taking Coumadin because of a mechanical Aortic Valve. I'am due for gum surgery in several weeks. My dentist wants me to stop taking the Coumadin 5 days prior to surgery. Is this to long? I read an artical about a man stopping Coumadin for 7 days and had a stroke. Your answer will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Dear Robert,

In general, we monitor people while they are stopping their coumadin and as their inr drops below 2.5 or so we admit for heparin therapy to cover this " vulnerable" time.
