Lipoprotein a

Lipoprotein a

I am 50 and have 20% stenosis in LAD by ct coronary ct
took berkley cholesterol test with total cholesterol 125, hdl 50, and LDL 75 on 20 mg crestor daily with 500 mg niaspan daily.
My liproprotein a is 140.
I understand niaspan is the only standard treatment.
Should I get my md to tritrate my dose up to 3 grams daily?
and  what about vitamin c and l-lysine .
I know there are no large scale studies but linus pauling has a patent on this treatment.
google liproprotein a and lysine
Any advise

Hi,
I'm 51 and my lipoprotein (a) is over 225 (literally off the charts). I tried Niaspan but at 1000 mg. per day it gave me an ulcer, so I stopped. I'm a big believer in 1000 mgs. of vitamin C divided into 2 daily doses - it's made a huge difference in my health, but mostly in keeping away colds, flu etc. not in my cholesterol numbers. Also be away that there was one study done that showed that too much vitamin C had a pro-oxident effect on LDLs - not good!  (Then again, that was just one study.) I know the panic you're feeling and I looked longingly at Linus Pauling and Dr. Rath's treatment, but to be honest, I've never known anyone to get the promised result. Let me know if you do! I see a doctor in Boston who is supposed to be one of the best blood lipid specialists, and he told me that keeping your LDL at 70 or less makes it "extremely unlikely" that the Lp(a) will hurt you. Some of us just have genetically high Lp(a). There is also a "kringle" issue with Lp(a), meaning that the molecule is folded into different numbers of kringles, and some of them won't bother (think beach balls instead of bullets).
Overall, you're best off keeping your LDL low and getting exercise.
