Long QT Syndrome

by Dona__0__0, Mar 29, 1998 12:00AM

I've been looking into this ,and have gone for a cardiogram but haven't been back to my family MD to discuss the results yet. I was wondering if this would affect my ability to donate blood ? I was at a clinic this evening and they refused me pending the results because the syndrome wasn't listed in their "book of disorders". You're reply to Donna on long QT was quite informative .Thank You .

Dear Angela,
There are a few medical and even a few non medical conditions that preclude a
person from being a blood or plasma donor.  Some put the patient at risk and
some do not, however if any person has a potential condition, even if unrelated
to the blood donation, surely their priority should not be to donate blood but
rather to have a complete evaluation of their symptoms and or condition.  It would
actually be improper for a clinic to accept blood and or plasma type donations
from any person who is unsure of any medical condition.  If you read the answer to
Jane, you may very well know that Long QT syndrome can be life threatening and
should be taken with the utmost seriousness.  Good Luck.
