Three years  ago my doctor put me on 50MG of Metaprolol once a day. This was due to funny heart rhythm, skipped beats and anxiety. Along with this he gave me xanax prn. I have now tapered myself off the xanax (very slow taper-pure hell). I would like to know whether or not it is advisable to begin to taper the bp med. What are the long term repercussions of taking this bp med? I would like to be drug free again if possible. I still have the same "funny" rhythm, skipped beats or PVC's. They don't bother me as much psychologically anymore. I have been through cognitive behavioral therapy and this helped tremendously. Do I have to taper? What can I expect? Has this med hurt my system any?
Thank you for your time.

Metoprolol has no known long term side effects. It also has not harmed you in any way by taking this medication. If you have high blood pressure the medicine ought to be continued. If it was just for skipped beats, then it should be OK to slowly taper it. However, you should do this in consultation with your doctor.
