Low blood pressure, especially diastolic

My father is in his mid 70's and has been on high blood pressure meds for years.
A few years ago he got an artificial heart valve (pig).  About 6 to 8 months ago he
had a blood clot in his leg from hitting his leg in the garage, and was given treatment
for that.  Very recently, however, he has developed low blood pressure (bottom number 49)
and he feels like he will faint and also says he is holding water.  His primary care doctor told
him to just keep taking his high blood pressure pills (he was wondering if he should stop them).
(I forget what the cardiologist he asked said, but it was akin to don't worry about it).  He really
thinks he should stop taking his blood pressure meds because he can't get the pressure
to come up to normal.  What might be going on and should he just stop the pill altogether?

My cardiologist wants my blood pressure as low as possible without symptoms.  No medication should be discontinued without the doctor's approval, however, the doctor may want to adjust the dose.
