mieke,
There is no indication for aspirin for the situation you mention.
The downside of aspirin is bleeding. So in a very small percentage of patients, cerebral hemorrage can occur. This is usually associated with larger doses of aspirin in elderly patients.
The main indication for aspirin use is the prevention of the complication of coronary heart disease. We usually recommend primary prevention with aspirin for high risk patients (risk >3% of cornary heart disease in 5 years). The use in intermediate risk patients patients with a 5-year risk greater than of 1-3% gets to be less clear. I usually do this on a patient to patient basis taking other historical factors into the descision.
an online risk calculator can be found at:
www.nhlbi.nih.gov/guidelines/cholesterol/index.htm
Other indications are for hypercoaguable patients and some patients with atrial fibrillation.
hope this is a start
good luck

The only time my cardio mentioned aspirin was when dischg'g me from telemetry and the reasoning was due to a blood clotting disorder (Factor V Leiden). I have never had a clot, but he didn't want to "wait and see". BUT he did say it's not a bad idea for anybody to start aspirin therapy at my age (mid 40's). He said he has his parents taking aspirin.
HAPPY MOTHERS' DAY to all the wonderful moms who frequent this board!! I hope your husbands and children pamper you today and make you feel like queens. You certainly deserve it.
Best wishes to all.
