MVP

Could you tell me if people with MVP with regurgitation and PVC's are at a greater risk of developing clots?
If so, should we be on a small daily dose of Aspirin?

I have also heard that people on daily doses of Aspirin are at a greater risk of cerebral haemorrhage, so which would put one at most risk, taking the Aspirin or not?

My doctor told me to take Aspirin 100mg daily and after a couple of weeks I developed quite a lot of bruises on my arms and legs so I stopped taking it, which he said was up to me. I would just like to clarify the above questions as to know what to do.

Thank you so much for your time.

mieke,

There is no indication for aspirin for the situation you mention.

The downside of aspirin is bleeding. So in a very small percentage of patients, cerebral hemorrage can occur. This is usually associated with larger doses of aspirin in elderly patients.

The main indication for aspirin use is the prevention of the complication of coronary heart disease.  We usually recommend primary prevention with aspirin for high risk patients (risk >3% of cornary heart disease in 5 years).  The use in intermediate risk patients patients with a 5-year risk greater than of 1-3% gets to be less clear. I usually do this on a patient to patient basis taking other historical factors into the descision.

an online risk calculator can be found at:

www.nhlbi.nih.gov/guidelines/cholesterol/index.htm

Other indications are for hypercoaguable patients and some patients with atrial fibrillation.

hope this is a start

good luck

I am glad you asked that question.  Because I read somewhere about a person having mvp and they were taking plavix.  I know if you have an atrial flutter they advise you to take it.  So it totaly blew me away when I read this person just had mvp and was taking plavix.  Maybe it also depends on the amount of reg.

I've had MVP/MR for 25 years and the only time aspirin was recommended was after I had an ablation to the left side of my heart. The doctor explained that the risk for a clot to form after that type of ablation is slightly bit higher. I was told to take Ecotrin (coated aspirin) for 45 days. Otherise, aspirin therapy has never been suggested. I have "mild MVP" and 2-3+ MR. Anyone else ever hear of aspirin therapy for MVP/MR?  News to me : )

hats the only time I have ever had to take aspirin and plavix.  Was after an ablation in my left ventricle also.  I only have mild reg.  I dont know if thats a 2 or 3 or what because my cardio doesnt list numbers on their report like that only the word mild.

I also have mild MVR and my cardiologist never once mentioned taking aspirin (he did prescribe an antibiotic prior to dental work, though). Later when I developed atrial fibrillation, he quickly put me on coumadin (I wish it were only aspirin!). I would think that taking an aspirin a day couldn't hurt and yet would be a nice safety precaution.

I have MVP w/MR, and TR, all mild.  I have IST and NCS, mildly elev. pulmonary pressure and now have a REVEAL PLUS ILR(heart monitor implant).

The only time my cardio mentioned aspirin was when dischg'g me from telemetry and the reasoning was due to a blood clotting disorder (Factor V Leiden).  I have never had a clot, but he didn't want to "wait and see".  BUT he did say it's not a bad idea for anybody to start aspirin therapy at my age (mid 40's).  He said he has his parents taking aspirin.

I have never seen or heard any evidence that having MVP, PVC's or PAC's cause more of a likelyhood of clots developing.

Thanks for the mother's day wishes, it is Mothers day here in Australia too, so I wish all the mothers a lovely day as well.  Thanks also to all of you for your advise and comments on this site, I have only been visiting here for a short time but feel as if I know you all from reading everyones interaction with each other.  We all share similar problems with our hearts and get a lot of comfort from knowing we are not alone.  Best wishes to everyone.
