MVP Or not??

by Jean27, Jun 01, 2002 12:00AM
Hello I have a question. I have had 3 echos by 3 different cardiologists. I am always aware of my heart beating.  They all say that my heart is fine and I have NO mitral valve prolapse but I HAVE trace mitral regurgitation. 1 test found an elongated mitral leaflet but the other 2 did not. They say this is not dangerous and dont need antibiotics before dental work.

I am confused and my question is why and how can I have trace regurg. without any mitral valve prolapse and is this something to worry about and what could be the cause of the regurgitation? Is this a common finding or a normal varient for some people or is it danger down the road?  Thanks so much look foward to your response Jean :)

Jean27,
Trace mitral regurgitation (MR) is considered "physiologic", or a normal variant. It is extremely common and most often occurs with structurally normal valves.

It is not considered dangerous and requires no therapy.  I would heed the advice of your cardiologists regarding dental prohylaxis.

As always, talk to your doctor.
