MVP or not

by G.S., Mar 06, 2002 12:00AM
I have the problem of rapid heart rate whenever I go to doctor or anxious. I had been to one cardiologist who himself did the echo and results are:
2D and M Mode examination done in multiple views revealed normal movement of both mitral leaflets during diastole.  Mitral valve opening is normal.  No SAM or mitral valve prolapse seen.  Aortic valve has three cusps, which are not thickened.  It’s opening is not restricted and closure line is central.  Tricuspid valve leaflets move normally.  Pulmonary valve is normal.Aortic root is normal in size.  Interatrial septum and interventricular septum are intact.Dimension of left atrium and left ventricle are normal.  No regional wall motion abnormality seen. Overall LVEF is 65%.  No intracardiac mass or thrombus seen.  No pericardial effusion seen.
Mitral diastolic slope(EF): 120 mm/sec
LV Ejection Fraction : 65%

MITRAL      Max. Velocity  : 94/76 CM/SEC Reg: Nil
AORTIC      Max. Velocity  : 135 CM/SEC    Reg: Nil
TRICUSPID   Max. Velocity  : 52 CM/SEC   Reg: Trivial
PULMONARY   Max. Velocity  : 120 CM/SEC   Reg: Nil

COLOUR FLOW: Trivial TR grade 1/4 seen occupying 10% of RA cavity.Normal colour flow seen across all the other cardiac valves.
I have been to another cardiologist who did the echo again after a gap of 10 days from the last echo and declared MVP. Is it possible to have MVP in one echo and not in another. Do I have MVP. If yes, then how severe it is. I am confused should I take third opinion. I am anxious only when I am in doctors office or anxious. My ECG is normal. What precautions should I take.

Dear GS,
It would be hard for me to say without looking at the echos myself.  In the past mitral valve prolapse (MVP) tended to be overdiagnosed both by echo and by exam.  Today we tend not to make this diagnosis in persons with no mitral regurgitation and otherwise normal hearts.

Increased heart beat is 100% common for anxiety and does not necessarily mean you have a heart problem - see a medical professional to be evaluated for a possible anxiety disorder.
