MVP syndrome

MVP syndrome

I had atrial fribilation last september and was CCu for three days and was diagnosed with MVP with regurgirtation. After several EKGs, echocardigrams, and two stress tests and holter monitor, no heart problems were discovered. Problem is with severe gastro symptoms, fatigue, light-headedness. Went to two gastrointrologists, one said Stomach is going into contractions. Am taking donatol for this. I am also on beta blocker-low dose and Premarin .035. I wlak three times a week or use treadmill. I try to drink a lot of water. What else can I do nutritionallly or other wise to stop symptoms from returning?

Dear Mitral Valve,
A large part of the answer to your question is dependent on the severity of the MVP and
the extent of your mitral regugitation which I am assuming you have simply by the presentation.  It is possible however for a person with MVP to have symptoms without mitral regurgitation (leaky mitral valve.)
That is why this is called a syndrome, i.e. it has a wide spectrum of presentations, symptoms, mitral valve involvement, and presentations.  There have not been a lot of reports linking gastrointestinal symptoms with the disagnosis of MVP, however this syndrome is famous for producing non-specific symptoms.
There is a good possibility that your symptoms of fatigue and light headedness are secondary to the beta-blocker medicine(tenormin) you were given and, or from recurrent atrial fibrillation that is unsuppressed by the tenormin.  As with any syndrome if you could identify (by keeping a diary of eating, exercise habits and symptoms)things that stimulate(bring on) your symptoms it might help you to identify and avoid those things that aggravate and even instigate the symptoms you describe.
I think it would be best for you to have continued evaluations of your symptoms, especiallly if they are interfering with your lifestyle in a significant fashion.  If you do have mitral regurgitation you need follow up and antibiotic prophylaxis (antibiotics prior to dentist, etc.)  I hope that I have been of some assistance.  Remember that information provided in the Heart Forum is intended for general medical informational purposes only, any diagnosis and treatment can only be made by your physician(s).
