I am 23 yr old male diagnosed with mvp about 2 yrs ago, when i visited the
Dr. because of slight heart palpitations and shortness of breath.
It seems like my symptoms come in "spells."
I go months with little or no symptoms, but then all of a sudden, one day,
for no reason, it will start again. I get shortness of breath, slight
chest pain and heart palpatations. I also get sleeping discomfort.
It seems to happen when i am most at rest. I dont know if is really worse
when i am at rest, or if it is just more noticeable.
Anyway, my symptoms persist throughout the day, and last for maybe a week or a little more.
  Then, the symptoms go away.
It has been a mystery to me on what causes these spells of mvp symptoms.
There isn't a sudden increase of stress and the spells seem to come
for no reason. Today I experienced the first migraine of my life.
At 23 yrs of age, I had never gotten a migraine before.
It really scared me and I came to the net to do some reading about mvp, and found
that migraines do occur in some mvp cases. (and found this fabulous site)Hopefully, i wont have another one soon or never again.
I read the following message on another site written by a doctor:

"Magnesium deficiency has been found to correlate
with the palpitations and chest pain of MVP. Low
concentrations of magnesium in white blood cells,
red blood cells and urine have been observed in
  selected research studies. Magnesium
supplementation has improved the symptoms of
MVP. Coenzyme Q10 supplementation has some
very encouraging results for people with
symptomatic MVP. After patients took 60 mg a day
for 2 months, researchers saw improvement.
Remember, if you have symptoms of chest pain,
palpitations or shortness of breath, be sure that the
cause is MVP rather than some other cardiac
   abnormality."
Does anyone experience shortness of breath and migraines caused by
mvp? They are the 2 symptoms i have that really bother me the most.
Have you found that using any type of medication or the supplementation,
spoke about above, reduces any symptoms? which ones have you used and what
  symptoms did it help?
Somewhere i read that mvp patients, that do suffer symptoms, should
  take 1/2 aspirin a day.
Is there any truth to this? I take no medications or vitamins at all.
I have never taken aspirin on a daily basis and have no idea on what
  it would do.
  Thanks for reading.

Dear John
Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a mechanical problem of the mitral valve. Magnesium or Coenzyme Q will not help it. You are young and obviously worried about your symptoms, but be wary about getting information on the Internet; most sites are not monitored and may contain wrong or dangerous information.
MVP does not cause migraines. It can cause shortness of breath if the mitral valve is severely damaged; if the valve is severely damaged, it needs to be repaired surgically.
You should make an appointment with your doctor. If there is a real suspicion of mitral valve prolapse, your doctor will need to order a cardiac ultrasound to see if the mitral valve is damaged. In addition, if you are having palpitations, it could be due to something else other than MVP. The first step would be to figure out what is causing the palpitations with appropriate testing.
I hope this is useful. Feel free to write back. I wish you the best of luck.
If you would like to set up an appointment with one of our cardiologists here at the Cleveland Clinic please feel free to call 1-800-CCF-CARE.
