Magnesium

Magnesium

I have had high blood pressure for a good while and I was just about to start on medication when last week I had a colonoscopy which involved taking solutions to provoke diarrhoea which contain  a high dose of Magnesium Oxide and since then my BP has dropped right down to about 130 over 80. I've been eating food rich in magnesium since then and it's still way down although my pulse is high for me as I have always had bradycardia and it's usually around 45 and now it's  70 to 80.
Anyway I'm wondering if this really could be down to the magnesium as I can't think why else it's suddenly altered?

If it keeps this way that'll be fantastic.  I must add that I was not in the slightest bit worried about having the colonoscopy.

Magnesium is very important in the body, used in hundreds of tasks apart from digestion. It is used extensively in the production of energy. The more magnesium you have, the lower your heart rate will be and less oxygen will be consumed. So, low magnesium would mean a higher heart rate and more oxygen usage to try and generate energy, even for light tasks.

Thanks for replying.  It seems to be the opposite for me my heart is beating a lot faster than normal but at a healthy rate, but the BP is right down.

A  high dose of Magnesium Oxide in  preparation for colonoscopy will and not unexpected cause low blood pressure and rapid heartbeat.

I recently had a colonoscopy and drank a gallon of golytely, also on other occasions magnesium oxide.  I was concerned with drinking so much fluid would have a harmful effect on heart patients by increasing volume and the heart would pump harder.  I was assured that the fluids go to the large bowel and no risk for heart patients.

Thanks for sharing and if you have any further questions or comments you are welcome to respond.  Take care,

Ken

I was advised to add magnesium to my list of supplements to aid with the coronary artery spasms. So there is some connection.

Yeah it sure looks like it brings it down, I'm just going to keep on with these magnesium rich foods and see how it goes, beats taking medication.
