Dear Theo,
Firstly, it is impossible to answer this question without knowing what kind of
surgery you need, as well as what the indication is for that surgery.
So long as you have the St.Jude valve you will be on a blood thinner, and at
any point, should you need surgery, the medicine called
coumadin that thins the
blood must be stopped and replaced with the IV blood thinner called
heparinHeparin
Heparin sodium
Heparin sodium-sodium chloride which
is much easier to manipulate. If the blood is too thin, you will have potentially life-threatening
bleeding during and after surgery. The risk of being off all blood thinners is that your
St.Jude valve can
clotBlood clots, luckily the St.Jude is the least likely valve

Knee joint replacement prosthesis to
clotBlood clots.
Talk with you doctors regarding these genuine concerns of yours. Good Luck.
