I had a maze proceedure on 11.2.2000 (and mitral valve repair). I am now in A-fib (yet again). I understand the scarring is not completed and the results of the proceedure may not be known for up to 6 months. But during this time does't an increased risk of stroke exist and consequently shouldn't I be on Coumadin? If not, why not?
Thanks,
Paul C.

As long as an individual is in afib there is an increased risk of stroke.  There is also an increased risk of bleeding on coumadin particularly in the early post-operative period.  It is up to your surgeon and cardiologist to weigh the benefits and risks as to whether you should be on coumadin or not.  In general most individuals should start back on coumadin in the 1-2nd post-operative week.
