Mitral/Aortic Valve Replacement

Mitral/Aortic Valve Replacement

Hello,

My mom is 62 years old who had an artificial mitral valve replacement in 1970 at the Cleveland Clinic.  She now needs a mitral and an aortic valve replacement which is scheduled at the Cleveland Clinic for the end of October.

I would like to know if she will be a candidate for the noninvasive surgery.  The only part of my mom that is weak is her heart, ever other part of her is extremely strong.

Also, I have 3 siblings and we (plus my father) would like to donate blood directly to my mom for her surgery.  We all have the same blood type.  How do we go about doing this?  How far in advance do we need to donate?

Thanks for your assistance.

Dear Marie,

Your mother would likely not be a candidate for a minimally invasive procedure in view of the fact that she has already had one surgery and scar tissue may pose a problem.  also her surgery ( a combined valve) is a more difficult procedure to do in this manner.

As far as blood transfusions, this should be arranged through the blood bank here at CCF and specify that this is for your mother.  If she needs blood every effort will be made to accomodate.  Otherwise the blood goes into the general blood bank pool.  You should arrange this ASAP through the number listed below and ask for the blood bank.
