Mitral Valve Stenosis and Surgery

My father is 84 ys old and has already had 2 open heart surgeries for aortic valve replacement. He is now in need of a mitral valve replacement. Cardiologist diagnosed it as critical mitral valve stenosis. All of this stems from rheumatic fever as a child.  He had his first surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in 1981 and the second at Florida Hospital in Orlando in 1993.
My father is in good health except for this. He does wear a pacemaker installed at his last surgery.
We know that surgery is a greater risk at his age.  My question:
Would he be a candidate for the minimual invasive procedure?  What are the risks and/or benefits for this type of procedure compared to regular open heart surgery?
Thanks so much for all your help.

Dear JanL,
Generally the minimaly invasive approach is reserved for individuals undergoing their first open heart surgery.  The problem is with the scaring and adhesions from the previous surgeries.  He probably should have his surgery at a center with experience in 3rd time open heart surgery because the risks are much higher.  If he is considering coming to Cleveland I would recommend Dr. McCarthy or Dr. Lytle.  He can call the following number for evaluation and scheduling:  (216) 444-8388
