Mitral Valve premed or not

Is it still recommended by the American Heart Association to premedicate before dental procedures?  I have been hearing lately that it is no longer the recommendation.

It is still receomended if you have high risk conditions: prosthetic valves or complex congenital heart disease. Otherwise it is no longer recommended.

That is what I heard the Cardiologist Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld of the Weil Cornell Medical Center in New York City say the other day "no more pre-meds before dental procedures".

You can go to AHA pages and see the new guidelines. Antibiotic prophylaxis is only recommended for people who have serious problems, not for healthy people with mild regurge. I think my cardiologist told me back in May, shortly before the new guidelines were published on the AHA site. Yipeee!! .

I have mitral valve prolapse with 1+ regurgitation - what my cardiologist regarded as very mild. However, she did indicate the need to premed before any dental procedure. I also have ulcerative colitis which is aggravated by the use of antibiotics. I have a periodontal procedure coming up & was told I'd need to take the antibiotics for 2 weeks after the procedure. I will certainly do it if necessary as protecting the heart is most important, but I also know it will aggravate the colitis. Is this an issue for anyone else?

I have a dental appointment tomorrow & I will be taking my pre-meds!  After 3 OHS w/both Aortic & Mitral Mechanical valves, you can bet I will pre-med!  Always have & always will!
