Mitral valve prolapse?

by lori g, Feb 18, 2004 12:00AM
Good morning and thank you in advance for answering my question.  I am a 30 year female from New York.  A year ago I was having symptoms that included tremmors, tingling in my leg, and rapid heartbeat.  My doctor and neurologist both diagnosed anxiety disorder.  Over the last year i have had some strange feelings in my chest.  When I am sleeping I occasionaly feel like my heart stops for a seconds and then i feel a forceful beat like blood is being pushed out and I also feel like my chest is sinking in when i breath laying down, when this happens I can feel tingling sensation in my chest.  It causes me too feel as thoug hI am having a panic attack. I also wake up with a severe internal trembling. I have heart palpitations at any given time, but always after exertion.  I can feel them in my throat too.  I do get light headed from time to time and I have been experiencing leg pains.  I do have lower blood pressure than is considered normal  100/70 could be lower at times.  I guess my question is  does this sound like it could be mvp?  I know one of my cousins have it and she discribed similiar sensations.

Thank you,
Lori

lori,

It really sounds like you need a good going over. Most of the symptoms you describe are pretty common place around here, and if you read through the message base, can lead to quite a bit of distress.

Your next step really should be to see an internist to get a complete history and physical to determine if any other diagnostic testing is indicated.

Pretty much every nonspecific complain has been attributed unfairly to MVP. As more stringent guidlines have been applied to echocardiography, it is not diagnosed as much as it used to be.  An echocardiogram would be the way to rule this out.  Even if you don't have it, it would not mean you aren't experiencing your symptoms.

See your doc as a start, let us know how things go.

good luck

Sounds like you should see your primary physician and have some basic diagnostic tests such as thyroid tests and other labs, EKG and echo.  An echo is needed to diagnose MVP.  People with MVP will report a variety of heart rhythm disturbances, sensations, SOB and even some chest pain.  Personally, I have had PVCs, chest pain and SOB but my situation progressed to where I needed surgery.
