I had a mitral valve repair which a 3mm ring was atttached one and half years ago at Loyola Med Center in Maywood Ill. Now my present EKG shows I had a heart attack since that time, also my ecocardiogram shows some deterioration of the left ventricle retractibility . My doctors feel I need an angiogram to determine what is wrong. I am not ready for another surgurical attempt. Please advise. DJ

Dear DJ,
It sounds as though you have both mitral valve disease as well as ischemic heart disease ( associated with blockages in your arteries).  It is often difficult for physicians to determine which of these is impacting on you decrease in heart function.  It is important for you to have a catheterization to see if there are blockages that may be amenable to a stent or PTCA.
Did you have a catheterization prior to surgery?  Sometimes in young patients, physicians forego a cath due to the very low likelihood of CAD.

I was just wondering about mitral valve prolapse and the ekg results.  What does it mean to have reverse polarity on my ekg for the lead 3 and the v3.  I went for an ekg yesterday because my heart was hurting and palpating.  I 've also had three ekgs that suggest a heart attach.  My doctors said that my heart was beating so fast that maybe the ekg machine didn't pick it up.  the nurse that did my ekg said she was worried that my heart would go into a fib and I don't really know what that means.  I'm very worried and scared I don't want to be admitted to a hospital.  Will valve replacement help in this case?  Please email me with some answers.
Thank you

Dear yvonne,
I will need some more details before being able to provide you with help.  What is  the severity and degree of your mitral prolapse.  do you have a murmur or leakage.
As far as the EKG, it is difficult to say what your rhythm was.  Sometimes patients with MVP have small electrical alterations in certain leads that are of no consequence as far as an old heart attack that would be certainly a different set of ECG changes.
Please write back with more details of your medical history so that I may assist you further.
