Mitro valve prolapse

I was diagnosed with Mitro valve prolapse in 1990 when I was pregnant with my first child at the age of 18. I am not on any medication and thru the years I have had tests done. And the doctor says I had nothing to worry about. My father has a heart murmur and gall bladder disease runs in my family. Lately I have been having chest pains more often. They are on the left side of my rib cage and under my breast a little. I really don't understand my condition and I have been told it only comes out during pregnancy, I have also been told that gall bladder disease can cause chest pain that people mistake as heart attack symtoms (symptoms).  The pain is sharp and last for 15-30 mins. sometimes 3-5 times a day. And it could be while driving or watching t.v. (relaxed). Is this something to worry about? Can it be the gall bladder or something else other than the heart? Or is it symtoms (symptoms) of my condition?

Dear Denise,
MVP or mitral valve prolapse is a syndrome that has great variability in how it expresses itself in the individual patient.  Some patients therefore have severe changes and require surgical repair and or replacement, and at the other end of the spectrum are patients with clinically insignificant mitral valve disease and require no drugs or treatment, just follow-up.  Fortunately, the large majority of patients are
at the clinically insignificant end of the spectrum and have only a minor abnormality of their mitral valve structure.  This syndrome affects 3-5% of the U.S. population making it a common disorder.
In regards to your developing symptoms while pregnant, this is not totally surprising as the blood volume increases in a woman
