More information on my diagnosis.

I have just been diagnosed with trivial anterior leaflet valve prolapse with mild regurgitation. Can you give me more information and a better explanation on this. My doctor says it is trivial but I will have to take antibiotics before any dental procedures.
Is this the same thing as Mitral valve prolapse?

Dear Loni,

You do indeed have mitral valve prolapse or MVP.  This is a condition where the leaflets of the mitral valve are particularly long and move back into tahe atrial chamber with closure.  This may or may not be associated with regurgitation.  This is usually well tolerated but should be followed yearly to determin if your valve becomes more leaky ( regurgitant) over time.

You should take antibiotics with any dental or GIor GU procedure as this will decrease any risk of endocarditis or infection to the lining of your heart.
I hope this has been useful. I wish you the best of luck. Feel free to write back.
