Multiple Valve Disease

by PR, May 14, 2001 12:00AM
I am a 48 Y/O female with multiple valve disease.  My mitral, triscupid and pulmonary leak, mildly.  However, my aortic valve has progressed to a moderate regurgitation.  I also have a grade II blowing systolic murmur.  I am on an ACE Inhibitor (Altace) for high BP and to relieve the stress on my valves, particularly my aortic valve.  I did have cardiomyopathy a few years ago, but that is now gone.  My heart is now a within normal limits, but barely.  My question, how common is it to have this problem?  And does the Altace make that much of a difference in preventing the progression of valve disease?  Thank you very much.

Dear PR,
Aortic regurgitation is not uncommon, particularly as people age.  Usually it can be treated with medicines and followed.  If it becomes severe or there is damage to the heart then surgery is recommended.  ACE inhibitors are commonly used in persons with aortic regurgitation and may reduce the increase in regurgitation.
