My 15yr old daughter had a siezure

by worriedmum1968, Oct 02, 2009 05:10AM
My daughter had her first fit about three months ago she was having an injection at school at the time. She was taken to hospital and she passed out for about 15 minutes but didnt seem to be any jerking or rolling of eyes or flickering of her eyes. She was checked and a week later was put on ecg for 24 hrs as she done her normal day. Two weeks ago she was in the shower and her nephew came into the bathroom with a nose bleed, While her older sister was seeing to him my daughter just passed out then she started jolting and having an obivoius fit her eyes were flickering and she was jolting and jerking this lasted for about 3 minutes but seemed like a life time my other daughter said. She came round very confused so she was taken to hospital again they have done anothe ecg 24hr one today. I do not understand why they are checking her heart i do not live with my daughter she lives with her dad 200 miles away and he is hopeless and hasnt asked any questions to the doctor. I am going to see if the doctor will talk to me over the phone but I dont think they can. So can you give me any thoughts on why they are testing her heart and not doing a brain scan or summin thank you

Sometimes a heart arrhythmia can cause fainting or seizure like symptoms. For years as a child they thought I had epilepsy. I had to go in each year for an EEG to read my brain activity. It wasn't until my teen years that a doctor said it was my heart causing the fainting and twitching. We moved and I never followed up on it until I was an adult.

But considering the full body involvement, she probably should have an EEG done to rule out epilepsy. Do you know if they found any heart problems from the ECG's? If not, then someone should insist on an EEG. These seizures could cause her injuries when she falls down like that. There are medications to control seizures and she can learn to recognize her aura that may come before a seizure hits and sit down in time.

Hi,
I'm so sorry to hear that you and daughter are going through this. It sounds like she is in good hands and they are looking for all possibilities of the cause of her faintings and seizures. There are many heart conditions that present with "seizures". These seizures are related to the lack of oxygen in the brain during abnormal heart rhythms. Many people are wrongly diagnosed with Epilepsy as the cause of their seizures but in fact are caused by the heart. I'm assuming Epilepsy was probably ruled out at the hospital and that's why they are looking at the heart.
You can check out the SADS www.sads.org website for the different conditions.

Electrophysiologists are heart rhythm specialists and you could ask if this is the type of doctor looking after her. If not, request one.

It must be hard for you being so far away but rest assured that if they are looking for a problem they will find the cause and treat her accordingly.

Take care

Thanks for your answers they are bothe very reasuring, we should have the results for the last monitering of her heart. She is beening refered to the hospital so hopefully get some answers from that. She is taking all well but is very scared and she hates any attention as she is shy. I will keep you posted what happens next but I would think its going to be a few weeks. Thank you again Take care
