My 20 year old son with Heart issues

My 20 yr old son was rushed to the hospital thursday morning with severe chest pains & pressure, shortness of breath,& arm numbness.Upon arriving, they immediately did a EKG & results came back extremely abnormal. They then ran another EKG & same results. The cardiologists initial thoughts was pericarditis. They then did a few more tests, including Echocardiogram (sp), CtScan, & blood work. They were going to due a angiogram, but the cardiologist stated ("I cancelled the angio for now until the other test results come back") We asked why & she responded in front of him "This test has many risks, I don't want to kill him" So when the results came back for the Echo & CtScan, she said it's not pericarditis, because the enzymes (cardiatic markers) test show a level of 7.0 & normal is approx .2 so there is some sort of injury or damage to the heart and that they would have to do a angiogram in order to determine where the damage or injury is exactly. They did the angiogram 2 1/2 hours later. While waiting, they did another enzyme test & this time they spiked to 15.0 and they showed much more concern. Then we met with a different cardiologist to go over angio results. He said he didn't see any damage or injury but didn't know why the enzymes spiked so high. Then they brought my son back to the ICU where he stayed until today (friday) They told us last night that they were running some more blood test & that we could talked to the Doctor (cardilogist) in the morning hours. So when we arrived this morning, we waited until 11:30am for the doctor. When we had a chance to talk with her, she said he only has pericarditis & that she was releasing him now. We were shocked! I asked her, why did his enzymes (cardiatic markers) spike to 7.0 then 15.0 if nothing is wrong. She responded by shrugging her shoulders and saying "who knows, maybe from smoking pot, he admitted to smoking pot yesterday"  then she basically shrugged us off & walked away saying "He's fine" Then they discharged him.

Sorry to hear about your son's recent problems.

Pericarditis and myocarditis occur when the heart or the sac surrounding the heart becomes inflamed. It frequently results in chest pain and ECG findings that mimic a heart attack. The cause of pericarditis can be difficult to determine and many times there is no inciting event which can be identified. Viral illness such as upper respiratory infections commonly precede the the development of pericarditis leading some people to believe that viruses are the cause. NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen) are usually tried for pain relief with most people recovering in a few days with no residual problems.
