My baby Gayle

by Cathryn, Sep 02, 1999 12:00AM
Gayle is 8.1/2 months old. She was diagnosed with complete AVS Defect. Heart scan shows that the septum does not join and both left and the right valves are leaking. The surgeon we consulted in Singapore is recommending surgery to repair the septum and correct the valves, concentrating on the left valve while compromising on the right valve. However, we were told that repeated surgery may be required as the valves will leak over time even after surgery is would seem to stop leaking.

We would like to get a second opinion from you. We understand this is quite a major surgery. Being a baby and all, and prone to infections and complications, what is the mortality rate of this sort of surgery. Can these defect be cured entirely and how much would a surgery like this cost in the States?

After surgery, can our baby be like other normal children, participating in sports and other high intensity activities?

We really look forward to your advise.

Best regards
Cat

Dear Cat,

Given the limited information that i have on your child, i cannot adequately answer these questions. You would do best to consult with one of our congenital cardiologists at CCF for a more informed and detailled opinion after perhaps sending medical records for review.

I would highly recommend Dr. D. Murphy who can be reached via our number listed below.
