Myocardial Rupture (Protective and Causative Factors?)

by Rosemary349, Nov 08, 2009 08:41PM
Hi there

Following my father experiencing a fatal acute ruptured MI some weeks ago i am starting to lolok into what proctects against rupture and what may contribute towards it.

From what i've found on the net so far it would appear that it is more likely in females, although a heart attack is generally less likely - but when it occurs it is worse.  A lighter heart muscle makes it more likeyl - and also, strangely, having not had heart disease and then having a first heart attack makes it more likely - something to do with not having developed collaterals.....

so it would seem that those with pre existing heart disease are somewhat more protected against rupture, than someone who had a first heart attack...

I don't know if anyone knows any more about this.

My dad didn't have any signs of heart disease and his blood pressure was always normal when he had it checked.  It's possible he had a heart attack two days before the attack and rupture in front of me.  The reason i say that is because a doctor had been travelling with my dad and he (retrospectively) said dad didn't seem well and that he (the doctor) offered to drive.  I think my dad refused and within '10 minutes' he was 'as right as rain.'

So no idea if dad had a heart attack then or not.....and people don't like to say too much to me.....but it would have been two days later that he had an attack and then rupture.

I'd be interested in anyone's thoughts as to what the risk factors are for rupture and ways of preventing it.

thanks :-)
