Need help to figure this out..

by Larry, Nov 15, 1999 12:00AM
My wife has had problems with her heart rate, going up and down, so far all the tests, stress, and echo are okay.  My question is that yesterday, we were walking through the mall. And my wife began to say that she didn't feel well.  So we went to one of the free blood pressure and pulse rate checks.  Her pulse rate was 111 while her blood pressure was 96 over 60.  Today her blood pressure was 117/56,p rate 88 and then 118, 65.  After about 2 hours her blood pressure went up to 127/66 p rate 59. I got her to eat someone and her pressure went up to 125/82, p rate 77. Usually her blood pressure is around 120-130/70-85.  Her pulse rate varies, due to her heart rate going up and down.  She has been having trouble staying awake at night. She was one who could stay up until 1 or 2 in the morning, now she is lucky if she can stay awake past 9 or 9:30.  Do you have any ideas of what could be causing her blood pressure to drop?  Any ideas on how to get it back up and stay up?  Thanks, I work and worry about her alone with the kids.

All the blood pressures that you list are completely normal, so it is not the case that she has low blood pressure. Similarly, the heart rates are all within a normal range. Thus, the cause of her symptoms is likely not her heart rate or blood pressure.

I have one more real quick question.  How low can your blood pressure go and you still be okay?

The answer to this question is very individualized. In someone that is used to having a very elevated blood pressure or that has severe arterial narrowing of the carotid arteries, a "normal" blood pressure may in fact be dangerously low. In general, a systolic blood pressure above 90 is considered normal.

I think it depends if there are symptoms or not ... my girlfriend typically has a bp of 90/55 and feels great.

A related discussion, varying pulse/pressure over period of days was started.
