New to Palpitations - feeling scared

by Stanley75, Jan 12, 2007 12:00AM
Hi all can anyone advise a scared person?
I went away training for a new job 6 months ago where I ended up with new friends drinking heavily alcohol and caffeine and also doing a lot of excercise. I started getting "bangs" from my heart and I could feel it missing a beat! I saw my doctor who listened to my heart and he said I was in good cardio shape but was getting Palpitations due to over-exciting my heart with the new lifestyle. He said to stop all the bad stuff and keep excercising they would probably go away.
I cut out alcohol and caffeine completely and kept fit. Several months later my problems are there one day and sometimes gone the next. I don't get "bangs" anymore just weird fluttering and almost feels like a grinding sensation from my heart, there are times I feel like I get a dull throbing pain from my heart area but it may be a muscle as I had this before my Palps started and I can remember straining my chest at the gym which started causing this pain.
I am trying to ignore them and find that when I am busy in my new job or something else I enjoy I don't notice them at all. I love my new job but it is very busy at times though I have never had problems with anxiety or stress.
I am 31, male with no family problems and at times am very scared about dropping dead. Can anyone tell me if my heart will return to normal? I trust my doctor he did not think any need for heart tests due to what I told him. I have read on this site but I don't understand what these of PVC's and PAC's are and whether that is what I am having.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

PVC and PAC are abbreviations for (usually benign) premature beats. If you type the terms in on the website here they will give explanantions.  Most people get them at least sometimes and in the presence of a healthy heart they are diagnostically insignificant. Some people feel them, some people don't, some people feel them sometimes and not others and some people think they feel them every time they feel a strong normal heartbeat.

If you are concerned, you may want to go ahead and have a cardiac work up. Unfortunately, once people get sensitized to all these beats and start getting a lot of tests they sometimes become obsessed with the subject, even thoguh there's nothing wrong with them.

How your body deals with anxiety is individual and frankly, if anxiety responses only happened at appropriate times it wouldn't be a problem for anyone.

since your doctors diagnosis was palpitations, this means you are having premature contractions of either the top part, or bottom part of your heart.. If this is the only problem your heart has, you wont RETURN to normal, because you already are normal. Everyone has palps, some people feel them, and some dont. No one knows why! by all means educate yourself, but theres alot of BAD info on palps out there, and alot of people suffering become obsessed.

I do not drink often, however if I have even 1 glass of wine my heart will palpitate terribly when I go to bed, even if that is 5 or 6 hours after I drank that glass of wine. If I get up to walk around it will stop. The minute I lay back down it starts again. It will last for sometimes 3-4 hours. I have been diagnosed with PAC'a. My confusion is why with a glass of wine and then why do the PAC's start like 5 hours after the wine and only when lying down. Does this happen to anyone else?

Same with me, only takes one glass of wine.  It's frustrating because red wine is supposedly great for the heart, yet seems to start PACs(premature beats) for me.  Overeating does it also - real bad if I'm stuffed and can last 3-6 hours.
