Not taking blood pressure medicine

by Pam__0__0, Nov 04, 1998 12:00AM

I was wondering what would happen to someone that was taking medicine for High blood pressure for over 25 years to suddenly stop taking it.
Would it cause heavy breathing, fatigue, headaches, loss of hair, stomach ulcers, bleeding in the bowels?
I know this was a long question.  But I really need to know.  My mother in law has stopped taking her medicine and these are all the things that have gone wrong since she quit.
She has seen every doctor in town and this new one has her off her medicine and all the rest said she really needed it.
I wish you could reply to my e-mail address.
  Thank you

Dear Pam,
Firstly, we NEVER respond nor correspond by e-mail, all information is given on the forum.
Whenever someone who has hypertension (abbreviated HTN, means high blood pressure) stops taking their
meds, they are putting themselves at a significant risk for stroke, heart disease, and kidney disease.
The fatique and heavy breathing can very well be symptoms of a failing heart, headaches can be from uncontrolled
high blood pressure, and the bleeding/stomach ulcers are most likely not directly related to uncontrolled HTN as is probably the case given the HTN meds were stopped.
I wish you luck in getting your mother in law appropriate medical care, sometimes it is very hard for people to hear that they have to take a medication for the rest
of their life.  I hope this information has been helpful, please feel free to write back with any further questions you might have.
Information provided in the heart forum is intended for general medical informational purposes only, actual diagnosis and treatment can only be made by your physician(s).
