OPCAP vs. CABG

by Soon to have surgery, Dec 07, 1999 12:00AM
Do you have empircal long and short term data on these procedures or a place that I can obtain the same?  It would be helpful if it is categorized by hospital, surgeon and procedure.  I would like to know mortality, infection, etc. If you were choosing for yourself, which procedure would you choose and why?  Does being 46 with hopefully a long remaining lifespan make a difference in your choice?

I am a 6'1", 204 lb, 46 year old, white male in otherwise excellent health.  I have no family history of heart disease, do not smoke and never have, eat a lowfat low cholesterol diet, have normal blood pressure (110/70), cholesterol is overall 155 and "bad" 77.  I need surgery for a blocked LAD and possible diagonal.  LAD has been plastyed and stented twice (4 inches) in the past year (Northwestern Memorial Hospital Medical Center, Chicago, IL).  The most recent stent was placed 6 weeks ago and there is already major restenosis as indicated in a angiogram perfomed yesterday.  The recomendation is bypass surgery.

I need this information quickly as I need the surgery right away.

Thank you.

You may wish to contact the Society of thoracic Surgery site and this has a listing of programs  and may have mortality statistics.
