PAC's and Benadryl

by cte1963, Jul 11, 2007 09:36PM
I have been taking Benadryl 25mg at bedtime to aid in sleep for many years.  I was diagnosed with PAC's about a month ago.  For about 3 weeks they were constant. Probably thousands per day.  I stopped taking the Benadryl for a couple of days and they disappeared.  Then I took it again and those PACs returned.  Has anyone else had this experience with Benadryl?  It's also found in your PM tylenol and PM motrin.  It's just amazing.  I am just wondering if the prolonged use of Benadryl has done this.  I looked up side effects and palpitations was one of them.  Interestingly enough, I have not taken Benadryl for several days now and NO palps for me.

Many medications for allergy and colds will trigger PVC's and PAC's. That's one reason I don't take them since my heart likes to flip-flop around on a good day even. What do I do when I can't sleep or have a cold? Sleep - I read a book, do a puzzle, something dull until I feel sleepy. Yes, I'll be tired the next day but I manage to get through it and will be tired enough to sleep again. Colds - I keep it simple by resting if I can, drinking plenty of fluids (warm teas help the sore throat). Mostly I just wait it out. I'd rather be blowing my nose than have my heart go wonky because of OTC drugs.

I'm TOTALLY with ireneo on this one.  I've found that reading before bed works better than any sleep aid ever could anyhow, plus it has the added benefits of keeping the mind sharp and taking my mind off of everything else.  I struggled for years with insomnia during the winter months until I made reading part of my bedtime ritual.  I don't know what it is, but it helps.

But specifically, just about anything for a cold or allergy will trigger me.  I have not taken ANY OTC medication, except for a very rare ibuprofen, since 1995 for this reason (among others).

hi, i just recently had this occur, i believe it was triggered by benadryl. im going to wear the monitor this week. i took two tabs on a monday and a wed last week and man ive been having palps non stop, they slowed down this weekend and i also was less freaked out after reading this forum so i am calm about it now but still need to check it out. i think we all can agree benadryls side effects arent worth the relief.
