PROPRANOLOL (INDERAL) -- May Dose Be Taken once daily instead of b.i.d.?

Hello,
I have been taking propranolol (Inderal) 80 mg/day for several years now to try to maintain moderate hypertension, and it's doing a fairly decent job doing so.
My doctor wants me to take 40 mg b.i.d., but I have noticed that when I take the entire 80 mg dose at bedtime (like if I forgot my morning dose), it helps me to relax and fall asleep.  I have a lot of trouble with anxiety, insomnia, etc., and right now I do not have access to benzodiazepines or hypnotics due to being "in between" doctors.
I was just wondering if I would be doing myself a great "dis-service" by taking the entire 80 mg dose at bedtime rather than splitting it up into 2 40-mg doses.  Is it dangerous?  Could my heart stop beating whilst I am asleep?  Is it acceptable if it is helping me to calm down at night to sleep?  Your input is appreciated.
THANKS - and I hope you and yours have a *terrific* New Year's holiday!

P.S. -- Contrary to my profile, which states I am a "she", I am a "he".

As far as I read, a single doses will not protect you adequately, it appears that it is eliminated in 6-8 hours.

The information that I read (from the Spanish Medicament Agency) indicates that should be taken twice or 3 times a day.

In the other hand, it seems that you are at minimum doses, so you can discuss with your dr. to take 80 mgrs at night and other in the morning.
