PVC with family history of heart disease

by SusieFL, Jun 21, 2009 09:07PM
Hi! I've recently started having tons of PVCs. I've worn a Holter, an event monitor (for a week) and had EKGs, all of which showed PVCs. I've also had a normal nuclear stress test, normal labs, and normal echocardiogram. I'm a 43 y.o. female. My father had his first heart attacks and double bypass at 45. My brother is 40 and is going in next week for an aortic valve replacement (he has a bi-valve). So . . . the family history is ugly.

I've failed both atenolol 25 and 50mg doses and verapamil (neither helped to decrease the symptoms). I have daily PVCs, from 3 a minute to 30 a minute, lasting from five minutes to several hours. Obviously, at the upper end of this scale, it wears me out!

I'm wondering what the next step should be? My father failed atenolol, but did well on Toprol XL. I'm wondering if I should mention this to my cardiologist? I don't see where Toprol is indicated for PVCs. Should I forget trying new meds, since others haven't helped--and learn to live with this? Or, does my family history require me to take aggressive action and find a way to stop these annoying palpitations?
