PVCs

I have been diagnosed with PVCs and slight angina.  Two months ago, I was averaging 3 PVCs per hour as measured by a Holter Monitor.  I also had a stress test which showed no additional problems.  I have given up all caffeine and alcohol.  My doctor placed me on 25mg of Atenolol once per day.  The PVCs now average between 5 and 10 per day.  Much better.  MY QUESTION.  Does this condition or this medicine cause any special considerations for dental work?  I am supposed to have a couple of fillings and a deep cleaning done in the next couple of weeks.  Are antibiotics indicated?  SECOND QUESTION.  Can you suggest anything that might lower the incident of PVCs even more?

Thank you very much for considering my questions.  You are providing a very valuable service.

You probably don't need to get it done but this will be up to you and your doctor.

Do you think i need to have this done (the holter or event moniter) or do I need not worry?  Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions!  I feel so silly at times because most people don't understand when I am trying to explain what I feel....it's good to know you do!

Yes, it is very possible for PVCs to not show up during an ECG.  The only way to confirm PVCs is to get a Holter monitor or event monitor test.

Dear Collinus,

It sounds like you are experiencing PVCs.  You can take comfort from the fact that these are completely benign.  There are many other postings on this site from other people dealing with the same thing.  Hang in there.

I wrote to you recently about the feelings I was getting in my chest.  Well, I am happy to say that I hadn't experienced one since then until about a week ago.  My doctor perscribed to me Lorezepam for anxiety, two a day and I was fine.  Recently, I moved my dosage to one a day and sometimes I wouldn't even take it..then I was getting intimate with my boyfriend and I felt that annoying little flutter in my chest!  I ignored it..and I didn't want to alarm him my mentioning it.  I have had like 10-15 ekg's within the past 6 months and the doctors say I am fine.  As a matter of fact anxiety seems to be there answer for everyting and this makes me sick.  Today I felt a big beat or a pause that made me want to cough.  I don't get dizzy or anything like that but I do get really nervous afterward.  I am assuming that if something was really wrong with me the doctors would have caught it or something.  I am in graduate school right now so maybe it is stress..but I don't feel stressed!  I excercise 3-4 times a week and I regulary watch what I eat...I do however drink about 2 diet cokes a day..I don't smoke or drink alchohol.  My questions then are this, what more do I need to do to get the doctors to listen to me and not dismiss what I am feeling and when should I worry about this being something really serious...can getting off my medicine for anxiety cause more palpitations...I have no family history of heart problems, are many of them hereditary?  PLEASE HELP ME, i think I am going crazy!  thanks

I wrote you a few weeks ago about what I was feeling inside my chest.  I went to the Doctors since then and they are telling me I am fine.  Actually I haven't had a palpitation since then until I found myself in an intimate situation with my boyfriend.  I felt one but just dismissed it as me being nervous.  Today I felt it again but this time it was different.  Kinda like a big beat or a pause where I wanted to cough..it only lasted like a second.  The doctors say I have anxiety so they prescribed Lorezapam to me.  I was on two a day for about a month but decided since I was feeling better to just go back to one a day.  Sometimes I didn't take one at all.  Doctor, I am so sick and tired of worrying about this.  There is no history of heart problems in my family...only depression and excessive worrying.  I excercise three to four times a week and my diet is reasonable...i do however drink a lot of diet cola at least one or two a day.  i recently had a full physical and came out with a clean bill of health.  so my question to you is this, do I need to keep hounding the doctors about what I am feeling and get them to give me more test (I've had like 15 ekg's within the past 6 months)or do I need to see a psychiatrist?  Because I feel like I am going crazy and this is really starting to control my life...I am in graduate school, and the stress maybe taking it's toll but I am not sure....your advice will be greatly appreciated...

No, antibiotics are for valve problems and not PVCs.  Increasing the dosage of teh medication will decrease the number of PVCs but also increases the risk of a side-effect from the medicine.
