Pacemaker ? Can u help??

Hello. So glad I found this site! I just turned 50 yrs old. I had a pacemaker implanted in Feb 2011. Dr's said I had "heart block". To this day I'm still unsure what that is, but I was in the hospital at the time for seizures & a rare disease called P.R.E.S. It's basically swelling of the brain. Anyway, I was watching tv in my hosp room when a code was called, nurses came running : it was for me! My dr showed on the EKG where my heart had stopped for a few beats & it was very low, like in the 40's prior ti tbat. After discussion & a 2nd opinion, I had the pacemaker put in. I  went for check ups etc & was told that it was pacing at 80-100%. They also had to adjust it twice. Then I moved in Sept of 2011 & haven't had the funds to find a cardiologist etc to get it checked. My question is, about how long do these batteries last, how long have u guys gone without a visit to ur cardiologist, & has anyone ever experienced any seizures from their pacemaker? Also, I can feel & see my wires thru my skin. Is that normal? Thanks for listening & I'm sorry to be so long! I'm new on here. I hope u all have a great day.

Hello and hope you are doing well.

Its unlikely that pacemakers can cause seizures. Its more likely that abnormal rate/rhythm of the heart can induce seizure activity. Pacemakers use batteries as their energy source. The batteries have a lifespan of 7 to 15 years depending on the type of pacemaker and amount of time the heart requires pacing. Its normal to feel the wires. And follow up with your doctor, it needs to be checked at regular intervals.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
